Staffordshire Chicken Breeders
Vaccination We are often asked if our chickens are Vaccinated.  The easy answer is that our POL Hybrids are vaccinated to commercial standards and our Pure Breeds are not vaccinated.  Why is that? Our Pure Breeds are bred on the premises from our own breeding stock.  Vaccines come in a variety of forms, frozen (liquid nitrogen), freeze dried etc and come in doses if 1000 birds.  Vaccines are also given to birds at different ages with some being repeated a few times.  For small breeders like ourselves, this is simply not cost effective and as we breed in small numbers and we rear birds outside on grass, the birds are not subject to the intensive rearing methods that commercial birds are and thus gain natural immunity from their parents and environment. Our Hybrids on the other hand are reared commercially and are delivered to us at 17-19 weeks old having had all their vaccinations as advised by Defra for commercial egg laying poultry.  This is why fully vaccinated hybrids are not available as day old chicks or growers (1-17 weeks old).  The vaccination schedule for these birds is as follows:
Age Vaccination 1 day Mareks 18 days Infectious Bursal Disease 24 days Infectious Bursal Disease Newcastles Disease Infectious Bronchitis 30 days Infectious Bursal Disease 6 weeks Newcastles Disease Infectious Bronchitis 10 weeks Avian Encephalomyelitis Newcastles Disease Infectious Bronchitis 13 weeks Avian Encephalomyelitis Pox Salmonella Newcastles Disease Infectious Bronchitis 15 weeks Newcastles Disease Infectious Bronchitis Vaccination programme for Hybrids
